Frequently asked questions about working with XBRL in ThunderDome®.
General
What are the XBRL cut off times?
The cutoff is 16 hours prior to filing for structural edits such as the addition or subtraction of line items, tables, and notes.
The cutoff is 6 hours prior to filing for all remaining edits.
Standard times might vary. Please refer to your custom timeline from RDG‘s XBRL team.
The XBRL update process is detailed here.
I am waiting on the auditors to send back corrections. Is that going to prevent us from filing on time?
If an update is required after cutoffs there may be little time to review the update ahead of filing and we would be unable to guarantee meeting the filing deadline. Changes made to the document past the 6-hour cutoff would need to be processed on a rush basis. The fee for rush service is $175 per labor hour and the number of labor hours depends on complexity. Rush service does not guarantee meeting the filing deadline. Please consult with an XBRL team member.
What can I expect from the XBRL process?
Please see the workflow overview and detailed information about working with XBRL in ThunderDome® in the XBRL section of our help center.
Who is the contact when I have questions about XBRL?
Please reach out to xbrl@rdgfilings.com and include file@rdgfilings.com on all correspondence, as that account is monitored around the clock and can help ensure timely responses.
Making Edits
Can I make edits while an XBRL update is in progress? Should I cancel the update?
Yes, you may edit the document while the XBRL update is in progress. All new edits will be captured in the next update.
Do not cancel the XBRL update for initial requests or structural change requests. These take the longest to process; the new edits will be captured in the next update.
You may cancel the request on all other updates, make edits in the EDGAR document, and re-request an update.
Should I cancel the update if I make edits while the XBRL update is in progress?
On all XBRL updates after the first update, we prefer you cancel the update request, make the edits in the EDGAR draft, and re-request once the document is final or if edits have been structural (new notes, tables, and row labels).
No; during the initial XBRL update, you may continue to update the EDGAR draft while the XBRL is in process. All new edits will be captured in the next update.
Will this change affect my XBRL?
All changes to the document impact XBRL and will require an XBRL update.
Requesting Updates
How do I request an XBRL update?
Learn about the XBRL update process in the XBRL section of our help center.
When do I need to request the first XBRL update?
We recommend requesting the initial update when XBRL sections of the document are 85% complete, usually about 7 days or sooner ahead of filing. Please refer to your custom timeline from RDG‘s XBRL team, keeping in mind the initial update takes about 72-96 hours to complete. More details are on the XBRL Update information page of our help center.
Do I need to request another XBRL update?
All changes to the document impact XBRL and will require an XBRL update.
To check the version number:
From the Dashboard, open the project and select the XBRL tab. The XBRL Update History appears in the first table. Look for a v-number to see which version of the EDGAR draft was used for the XBRL update.
Do I need to request an XBRL update if I already notified?
The “Notify” feature in XBRL Viewer is used to convey tagging comments and for tagging discussion. The “Request Update” feature is different and it is used to update the XBRL for changes that have been made to the EDGAR document. These two features are intentionally separate because adjusting the concepts used to tag the XBRL does not necessarily mean that changes have been made to the EDGAR document.
Notifying and updating are not always used in conjunction with one another. You only need to request an XBRL update if changes have been made to the EDGAR document. Please note, the XBRL process is typically completed in 2-4 updates per project.
Can I request an XBRL update while we have Track Changes turned on in the document?
Yes; however, the tracked changes will show as part of the document in XBRL and another version will have to be completed after track changes are accepted before being able to file. If tracked changes are part of a table, the table cannot be tagged correctly. Tracked changes must be turned off or accepted to avoid a filing suspension.
XBRL Comments
How do I REVIEW comments?
Log in to ThunderDome and click the XBRL icon to access the XBRL Viewer. Want to know more? Learn all about working with XBRL comments.
How do I RESOLVE comments?
Comments are resolved when they are approved. Some comments do not require action and are generic comments meant to communicate new items since the previous quarter’s filing. Comments such as inconsistencies require edits made in the document. Our helpful tips about XBRL comments are available for quick reference.
Do I need to leave comments on approved line items?
No, once a comment is approved it will not be reviewed. Please do not approve comments if you would like to continue discussing the XBRL line items.
Filing with XBRL
When should I request a quality assurance review and test filing?
We advise making the request when the document is final, before the final XBRL update request, as edits to the document can result from the quality assurance review.
What are the XBRL “warning” messages from the test file?
Some warning messages are common and expected for iXBRL filings. Warnings in a test filing may indicate issues with the filing, while others are common, expected, and will not impact the filing later today. Please see Interpreting & Troubleshooting Errors or Warning Messages on Your SEC Submission. You’re also welcome to request assistance from our EDGAR team.
If we file after the SEC deadline of 5:30 pm ET, but before 10:00 pm ET, do we leave the signature date for today or change to tomorrow?
We recommend checking with your legal counsel on the date change. All filings between 5:30 pm ET and 10:00 pm ET today will show up on the SEC website tomorrow morning when they reopen at 6:00 am ET.
When must the document be final in order to file before market opens?
We advise requesting the final XBRL update by 4:00 pm ET the night prior. This allows enough time for us to meet the 6-hour cutoff for edits and complete a successful test file before the SEC closes at 10:00 pm ET.
